Photographer Behind the Lens ~ Megan {Megan MacDonald Photography}
This week we are featuring the amazing Megan from Megan Macdonald Photography as our Photographer Behind the Lens!
Share a little about you...
I’m Megan Macdonald a newborn photographer based in Adelaide, Australia. I’m kind of obsessed with newborn photography and I’m a bit of a prop addict. I never got any newborn photos of my own daughter which is a massive regret to this day!
How did your photography career begin?
I have always been a keen photographer since high school but my photography career begun in 2004 when I photographed my sister n laws wedding. I instantly fell in love with the challenge of trying to capture the perfect moment. I have shot weddings off and on since then and about 2 1/2 years ago I started photographing newborns.
Describe your style in one sentence
Vintage inspired newborn photography with an emphasis on baby.
What do you love most about photography?
I love the moment you press the shutter and you know you got a winner! You never really know what you're going to end up with but occasionally you can tell you captured something perfect right from the first click.
Share with us your all-time favourite image, and why...
I dont really have a favourite newborn image but I definitely love a good bucket shot. There is something about a baby in a bucket that is just perfectly ridiculous and perfectly adorable all at the same time.
Share a sneak peek inside your camera bag! What is your favourite lens?
I use the Canon 50 mm L series lens for all my newborn photos. I dont have a 35 mm (On my want list!) so I have just always used my nifty fifty. It is a nice lens but mine did take some micro adjusting to get the focus right. I like that you dont get much distortion and it’s a flattering lens for parent shots as well.
Share a sneak peek inside your studio..
My home studio is extremely cozy! My studio is only 5.3 m X 3.8 m its super small! It’s a constant work in progress because I’m always trying to utilise the space as best I can. I have a reasonably big prop collection and I keep having to rearrange everything to fit it in as it expands every week.
What’s inside your editing toolbox? What post processing tips/tools do you love the most?
I do most of my colour/styling of photos in ACR using my own presets that I have tweaked over time. I like to get the look of the photos sorted before I do any retouching. Lindsey Williams new skin retouching actions are great and I love her red remover and colour correctors.
For a bit of fun…. share an image from your first paid session and from your most recent session! What has contributed most to your development as a photographer?
I think what has contributed most to my development as photographer is being super critical of my own work. I always see something that can be tweaked or refined so I would probably say my OCD and stubbornness!
What is your #1 tip for photographers?
I think practice is the best thing for a photographer. The more you do something the better you get at it. I find I am always learning and always refining and I cant wait for the next session so I can learn or practice something new.
